Why Take this Program?
If you are interested in delving into the mysteries of the lost island of Atlantis and then unearthing your way back through the archeological ruins of ancient Athens and Olympia, then this program is for you. Each day we map human connections to our past as we discover how the ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle laid the foundation to our modern thought, and explore how the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides established the storyboards to today’s box office hits.

What People Are Saying

I learned so much about the world and about myself with MEI. The teachers were extremely supportive and the students all meshed together really well. We really did become a family. Learning about history in such an immersed way, with teachers that are so passionate about the subject is beyond compare. I came back with the most amazing memories, knowledge and new friendships that will last forever. It was an unparalleled experience that is absolutely priceless to me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop traveling now!

Program Preparation
Online Foundation Work
Departure
Day 1: Students within Canada will meet at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Students from outside Canada will fly to Athens, where an MEI teacher will greet them at the International Airport and escort them to our hotel.

Athens
Days 2-8: Arriving in Athens, we step back in time to discover the roots of Western civilization. Our quest is far more than a tourist's taste of Greek food and dance; we search for the origin, growth and decline of a culture that resembles our own. Athens is teeming with the sights, sounds and smells of this complex ancient society. From the Acropolis' mythological heights to the gritty markets in the Plaka, you'll experience an astonishing cultural organism that will capture your heart and mind. Our journey explores how people struggled to establish a meaningful life; from living off the land to developing a vast trading empire that spread the ideals of art, religion, politics, and philosophy worldwide to our present day. You will taste Athens' best gyro wrap, dance to traditional Greek music, and barter for handmade jewelry in the marketplace. In Athens, our adventure begins.
Santorini
Days 8-15: Continuing our journey back to the origins of ancient Greece, we sail to Santorini, once believed to be the legendary Atlantis. Here, students continue their investigation of ancient myth and explore the formation of a collective understanding of self and culture through examinations of Homer's epic tales of Achilles and Odysseus. Digging into their course reading list, students also do a comparative study of classical Greek texts with modern interpretations and adaptations. When not debating in lecture, we spend our time wandering the cliffside towns and black sand beaches of this fabled island, concluding our time there with an epic hike along the caldera from Oia to watch the sunset over the capital of Fira.

Mykonos
Days 15-22: Our next stop truly is a pearl in the Aegean Sea: Mykonos. Along the picturesque Platis Gialos beach, students focus on academic writing and delve into the analysis of core texts for English. Students have fun finding their way back to their favourite gyros stop, as their senses are confused by the maze of narrow streets. On a day's adventure, we sail to the island of Delos, the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. As one of the most sacred grounds in ancient Greece, it became the meeting ground where the Delian League housed its treasury. Our final evening in Mykonos is spent celebrating the end of a week in paradise, grabbing gyros and gelato, and reflecting on all we have seen and done together.
Langadia & Olympia
Days 22-27: After leaving the Greek Islands, we start our exploration of the Peloponnese in Langadia. This mountain village provides a different texture of Greek rural life. It is an ideal setting to build confidence and presentation skills while locals help us design a traditional Greek lunch as we venture off the beaten track for a full-day hike through the Lousios Gorge. There is nothing like the fresh mountain air, secluded monasteries, and the intoxicating sounds of waterfalls to ignite your senses. Olympia's archaeological ruins are home to the first Olympic games. Here, you have the unique opportunity to lace up and run the original Olympic stadium's track. We'll trace the beginnings and importance of the ancient Olympic Games and delve into the ethos of 'competition.' There is nothing like a foot race or wrestling match to bring out the competitive spirit.

Tolo
Days 27-32: Our journey is almost complete, but not before a stop at the beautiful coastal town of Tolo. Our biographical study of Heinrich Schliemann, businessman-turned-archeologist, leads us alongside his epic lifelong passion for discovering lost civilizations. Using Tolo as our home base to explore the lost city of Mycenae, we'll delve into a close reading of Homers' Iliad and Odyssey. The ghosts will come alive as we wander through the tombs of Clytemnestra and stare into Agamemnon's bronzed death mask. Another day's adventure takes us to Epidaurus, where our focus will be on Greek drama. Here, we'll perform scenes from Aristophanes, Euripides, and Sophocles' Greek plays and analyze how ancient Greece influenced modern western societies. Between excursions, Tolo's relaxing beach town provides a tranquil setting to recharge and enjoy a refreshing swim. It's also the place to perform creative short stories, spoken-word, and songs in open mic podcast sessions in the evening.
Athens
Days 32-35: Returning to Athens allows us the time to review what we've discovered and to delve deeper into areas of interest. Pericles' leadership style, Socrates' execution, and Alexander the Great's ambition inspire you to develop your research assignments when returning home. Each day is an adventure of discovering hidden gems so that your academic studies become a REAL education. After an epic graduation ceremony with the Acropolis as a backdrop, we'll savour our last dinner as the sun sets and the bouzouki music lingers in the air.
Departure from Athens Airport (Day 35)

Online Final Evaluation Week
After returning home, you will have time to complete additional research and pull together the work and insights you gained from your travel experiences. You will complete an online, interactive examination. MEI students and teachers have found this evaluation style the most authentic, thorough, and enjoyable method to demonstrate what you have learned.
